Social Rationality, Religious Diversity, Interreligious HarmonyAbstract
This study aims to examine the rationality of the community in Balun Village, Turi Subdistrict, Lamongan Regency widely known as the “Pancasila Village” in responding to religious diversity in everyday social life. The research focuses on how patterns of thought, attitudes, and social actions are constructed to maintain harmonious interreligious relations within a plural religious setting. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders, community figures, and residents from different religious backgrounds, supported by participant observation and document analysis. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical technique involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the rationality of the Balun Village community is shaped by a shared awareness of tolerance, humanity, and social solidarity as fundamental values for communal life. Religious differences are rationally perceived as an inevitable social reality that must be managed through mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperative social practices rather than viewed as a source of conflict. This rational approach is reflected in daily interreligious interactions, such as mutual respect for religious rituals, joint participation in social and cultural activities, and the strategic role of religious and community leaders in fostering social cohesion. The study concludes that the rationality of the Balun Village community toward religious diversity is inclusive and contextual, aligning with the values of Pancasila as a national ideology. This model of social rationality demonstrates the potential of local communities to manage religious diversity constructively and offers a valuable reference for promoting interreligious harmony in multicultural societies.
